Note 1: In a room or play ground with 15 or 20 children, it is not hard for one child to be gone for a period of time before being missed. Children have exited room's behind an unsuspecting parent or when a door or gate was left unlatched. When the group is "divided" it is much easier to monitor. Each caregiver can more effectively monitor a small sub-group and no child is overlooked by an assumption they are being monitored by someone else. In one center a young toddler (14 months old) exited a playground (a parent picking up a child had left the door open) wander through the main care facility building and was entering the main parking area, when found by an arriving parent. When the arriving parent returned the child to the rear play area both caregivers exclaimed they thought the other was watching the child! ! Note 2: If a room is too noisy, either due to the number of children in the room, or due to overflow noise from other rooms, staff and teachers are often stressed - noise can damage young ears and is extremely stressful, when continuous). |
